Hot-dip galvanization (HDG) is the process of immersing the fully fabricated steel frame in molten zinc at ~450 °C. The zinc metallurgically bonds to the steel, forming a corrosion barrier that is thicker, harder and more abrasion-resistant than any paint system. MegaDome frames are galvanized to CSA G164 / ASTM A123, the same standard used for Ontario highway guardrails and hydro transmission structures.
In service, HDG protects the frame from road salt, agricultural ammonia, ore dust, marine humidity and de-icing brine — the everyday chemistry that eats painted or powder-coated steel in five to ten years. On MegaDome, the coating delivers a 50+ year design service life without repainting, which is why Ontario municipalities specify HDG for their salt sheds and DOT depots.
