The Customer
A Northern Ontario charter operator running a King Air B200 plus support fleet out of a regional airport. The operator wanted a dedicated maintenance hangar to bring scheduled maintenance in-house and reduce dependence on out-of-region MROs.
The Challenge
The hangar had to fit a King Air with full wing clearance, accept a future Caravan as a second tenant, and meet Transport Canada and NAV CANADA airport site review requirements. The build had to fit within a single summer construction window.
The Solution
A 90' × 90' × 24' MegaDome with an engineered 80' wide × 18' tall bi-fold hangar door, concrete slab foundation and translucent membrane for daylight maintenance. Stamped engineering and full airport site coordination.
Why MegaDome Was Selected
MegaDome was selected because the clear-span geometry gave the full hangar footprint without internal columns, the translucent membrane reduces daytime lighting cost during maintenance, and the 8-week build cycle fit the summer construction window with margin.
Construction Process
Site prep, slab forms and underground services in weeks one and two. Slab pour in week three. Frame erection weeks four through six. Membrane and bi-fold door installation weeks seven and eight. Commissioning on the final day.
Foundation Construction
Engineered reinforced concrete slab with a thickened edge under the perimeter base channel. The bi-fold door header was supported on engineered columns tied to the slab with a thickened pad. Slab finish was a hangar-grade smooth trowel with engineered control joints.
Installation
Steel arches raised in three weeks. Membrane tensioned the following week. Bi-fold door installed and commissioned by a specialist door contractor as part of the Building Depot turnkey scope. Final walk-through with the operator and airport authority on the closing day.
