The Customer
A Northern Ontario mid-tier gold producer operating a haul-truck fleet that was maintained outdoors year-round. Winter maintenance windows were losing days to weather and heater fuel was climbing.
The Challenge
The operator needed a heated, clear-span shop tall enough to bed-up a Cat 785 haul truck (needing 30' clear at the ridge), wide enough to run two trucks side-by-side, and built inside a single ice-free summer window. Foundation had to work on the site's shallow bedrock.
The Solution
A 100' × 240' × 32' MegaDome with hot-dip galvanized frame, AR-series lower wall panels for tire contact zones, insulated membrane package, radiant tube heat and a full concrete slab with trench drainage tied to the mine's oil-water separator. Foundation was engineered anchor blocks pinned to the bedrock.
Why MegaDome Was Selected
MegaDome was chosen because the clear-span geometry gave two haul-truck lanes without columns, the galvanized frame handles the ammonia and hydrocarbon environment, and the 11-week build cycle fit the ice-free window between spring melt and freeze-up.
Construction Process
Anchor block layout and bedrock pinning in weeks one and two. Slab and trench drains in weeks three and four. Frame raising weeks five through seven. Membrane, insulation and end walls weeks eight and nine. Radiant heat and electrical commissioning weeks ten and eleven.
Foundation Construction
Engineered concrete anchor blocks pinned to shallow bedrock with grouted rock anchors, tied together with a reinforced concrete slab and trench drainage system routed to the site's existing oil-water separator.
Installation
MegaDome arches raised in three weeks using a 90-ton crane. Insulated membrane package tensioned over the following two weeks. AR-series lower wall panels installed in the contact zone. Radiant tube heat and LED lighting commissioned in the closing week.
