Code and Environmental Requirements
Storage must be on an impervious pad, fully covered, with controlled access. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks recommends specific setbacks from wells, surface water, and property lines. We engineer to local conservation authority guidelines on every project.
Why Fabric Beats Steel for Salt
Salt vapor is highly corrosive. Painted steel buildings start rusting within 2-3 years even with ventilation. Fabric membranes are inert to salt, and the hot-dip galvanized truss inside has zero exposed coating to attack. We have Ontario salt domes 20+ years old with no structural degradation.
Typical Sizing for Ontario Municipalities
Most townships need 1,500-4,500 tonnes of storage. Common building sizes:
- Small township (1,500 t): 50×80 ft
- Mid-sized (3,000 t): 60×120 ft
- Large (5,000+ t): 80×150 ft or larger
Push Walls and Access
Almost every salt dome uses ecology block push walls (typically 12-16 ft high) so loaders can push material against the inside of the wall without damaging the structure. Doors are sized for the largest loader bucket plus 3-4 ft clearance.
